Reducing the environmental impact of our activities

At the Printemps Group, we believe that every action counts to reduce our environmental impact. Since 2016, we have worked every day to apply the first pillar of our CSR strategy, “a responsible Group”, by reducing our consumption of energy and raw materials, recycling our waste and decarbonizing our transport. Our remarkable initial results have encouraged us to step up our efforts.

Energy efficiency pursued on all our sites

For almost ten years, we have defined and implemented a proactive and ambitious policy of energy sobriety throughout the Group. To maximize the impact of this policy, we strive to identify best practices so that they can be shared and duplicated as widely as possible. Our stores now use LED lighting, which consumes less energy than traditional light fixtures. We also strictly control energy consumption related to heating, interior and exterior lighting and air conditioning, which are only active during our opening hours. Constant energy monitoring, combined with an automatic alert system, enables us to detect any anomalies in consumption. Last but not least, we regularly run awareness-raising campaigns for our employees, to ensure they play a full part in bringing about change. Our logistics sites are also included in these measures: to sustainably reduce energy consumption, the Group has signed a ten-year Energy Performance Contract with GreenYellow. The main focus of the program is to install an electric underfloor heating system, coupled with a heat pump, which will reduce heating consumption in our warehouses by 60%. In the space of five years, all these actions have enabled us to achieve our target of a 40% reduction in energy consumption at our Printemps sites (stores, head office and logistics site), originally set for 2030. We are proud of the results we have achieved, but we know there is still a long way to go and that excellence in this area requires a collective commitment over the long term. That is why, in 2024, we carried out our first carbon assessment based on the ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) methodology. Divided into six categories, it aims to measure our greenhouse gas emissions and implement a transition plan to further reduce our impact on the climate.

Collecting, sorting and recycling waste

Since 2016, the Printemps Group has worked to improve and implement its shared waste management practices, in particular by monitoring the sorting and collection of waste for recycling at all its sites. For the head office and the Printemps Haussmann and Citadium Caumartin stores, the Group has signed a contract with the recycling company PAPREC for the recovery of off-sales and office waste. The results achieved show a steady improvement, thanks in particular to the sorting awareness campaign carried out among our employees. In the same field, cigarette butt collection bins have been installed, in partnership with the company Cyclope, enabling the collection of more than seven million cigarette butts since 2017. The management of packaging bags represents a major challenge for the Group. This is why, since 2017, all our bags have been made entirely from FSC-labeled paper from sustainably managed forests. Since 2018, they also display the Triman logo to encourage our customers to recycle our bags. Finally, since January 2018, 100% of Printemps du Goût's food waste has been collected and then recycled by one of the methanization platforms run by our partner Moulinot, which employs people through job placement programs.

Transport and delivery: efficient alternatives to diesel

With 30 Printemps and Citadium stores to supply and millions of customer orders to fulfill, transport is a key issue for our organization. Improving the environmental footprint of our logistics while maintaining an irreproachable level of service is a daily challenge. For this reason, CSR is fully integrated into our specifications when selecting our partners. For example, deliveries to our Paris stores are made only at night, using vehicles powered by natural gas (NGV). We have also decided to do away with express delivery by air. Store transfers, head office errands and customer deliveries from Printemps Haussmann are now carried out by a fleet of couriers, 85% of which are electric vehicles: cargo bikes, scooters and electric vans.

Greening Paris

Flowers and vegetation have always inspired Printemps. Did you know that from 1870 to the 1890s, the brand offered its customers elegant bouquets of violets to welcome the arrival of the summer season? Flowers are omnipresent in the architecture and decoration of Printemps stores. As part of the “Charte de la végétalisation des toits de Paris”, whose overall objective is to green 100 hectares of the capital's rooftops, the restaurant terraces on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors of the Printemps Homme and Printemps Femme buildings have been entirely revegetated.
